Contemporary Guitar and Bass
ARIA nominated Australian musician Peter Gelling was born in 1960 in Bulli NSW, where he received his first guitar lessons at the age of nine. During high school he also played cornet and trumpet.
Peter’s passion for the blues started after hearing Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee at the age of 16. From then on Peter has dedicated himself to music, starting with learning to play authentic Blues guitar by learning from the records of legends such as BB King, Albert King, Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson.
Peter went on to study classical guitar, theory, harmony and piano at the Canberra School of Music. He later studied composition with Charles Bodman–Rae and Graeme Koehne.
His styles now include jazz, classical as well as blues, rock, funk, soul, hip-hop and folk traditions. Over the years he has become accomplished on bass, clarinet, tenor sax, drums and keyboard,
From 1988 to 1996 Peter was guitarist, blues harpist and musical director of legendary Australian band Blind Freddy. The band worked with many international acts including Albert King, Junior Wells, Canned Heat, Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers, Little Charlie and the Nightcats, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Maria Muldaur and John Hammond. In 1995, Blind Freddy produced a self titled CD with many of the tracks written by Peter.
Peter has had more than 60 instruction books published as part of the best-selling Progressive series, which sells worldwide. Peter wrote, arranged, produced and played most of the instruments on the recordings that accompany each of the books. The arrangements cover a wide range of musical styles and ensembles ranging from duos to full orchestral scores.
Peter’s album award winning album Fortune (2003), features the spectacular voice of Sydney (ex Chicago) singer Doug Williams. Peter’s song "Tell me Blues" won the 2003 MusicOz Blues Award and "Strong Medicine" took second prize in the 2004 ISC International Songwriting Competition, judged by the legendary BB King.
Fortune was reviewed in Rhythms magazine as "one of 2003's outstanding releases" and given 4 stars by both the Sydney Morning Herald and the Melbourne Sun Herald.
Lessons with Peter
Individual lessons with Peter are held at ACTAM Studios in Fyshwick and in Bungendore. Fees are based on a 9 week term. Extra lessons can be arranged with your teacher.
