Somesh believes that music is a community endeavour in which learning and playing are encouraged and guided by peers and those further along the path, and that the ultimate aim of playing is to connect with other people. He performs and records in many genres including rock, funk, indie, pop, and musicals. While maintaining this diversity, Somesh has fallen deeply in love with jazz. Initially drawn by the volatility, flexibility and demand for skill and precision, he has found a deep and personal emotional bond with the music, which has sustained his passion and motivation for his art and craft to this day.
As a teacher Somesh likes to match the interests of the student, believing that growth and mastery come from the interest and fire that each person brings. He uses his knowledge to guide students on their own musical path, imparting universal concepts such as technique and time, through the musical lens that speaks most strongly to the student.
Somesh has been performing at the age of 15 when he joined his first band. From that point he has immersed himself in the music community of Canberra performing and attending gigs. He moved to Melbourne where he studied a Bachelor of Music at the Victorian College of the Arts/Melbourne Conservatorium of Music graduating in 2019.
